A-level Drama and Theatre Studies

In this course you will have the opportunity to explore exciting new ways to create theatre. You will gain an appreciation of different styles oftheatre and the practitioners who created them. You will practically explore two very different plays, examining the many different elements that bring them to life on the stage! You will become a member of a theatre company and perform a scripted play to a live audience.

The department prides itself on giving students opportunities outside of the curriculum to develop their passion for and knowledge of the subject, including whole school productions; opportunities to study acting and verse & prose LAMDA examinations and/or arts awards; theatre visits and exciting masterclasses with visiting professional actors working in the industry today. You will also develop your devising skills and craft your own piece of theatre, using techniques from leading theatre companies and practitioners.
You will be given opportunities in both practical units to choose to be assessed as performers or design technicians (lighting, sound, costume, set) using our new state of the art equipment.

Drama gives you valuable life skills, such as team work, confidence, public speaking and communication that will make you highly attractive to employers in all sectors. This is an ideal opportunity for somebody who is passionate about the arts, who enjoys working practically and enjoys expressing themselves.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

In addition to the standard entry requirements, the following subject entry criteria should be met: 5 in GCSE drama if taken (NB. Students who have extra-curricular or other performance experience (acting, dance or music) but did not study GCSE drama will be considered - please get in touch with Mrs Roberts, Head of Drama, if you are in this situation) Ideally a 5 in GCSE English literature due to the analytical demands of the written paper.

This Course Will Lead to

This is the perfect preparation for anybody who wants to study drama at university or theatre school and go on to a career in the arts. However, studying drama complements many other subjects, such as law, psychology, English and media. It is useful for building confidence and improving presentation skills in a range of careers, making you attractive in many other sectors.
