Sociology is the study of how society is organised and how we experience life. Sociology deals with global questions like 'What is culture?'
During the course you will study youth culture, family life and what makes up our identity. Dimensions of identity including social class, ethnicity, gender and age will be discussed and evaluated. Sociology is a useful subject for a wide range of professional jobs. It is increasingly noticeable that barristers, solicitors, journalists, teachers, politicians, police officers and many business people have a background in sociology.
There is no requirement to have studied this subject at GCSE level to be accepted onto the course.
People who study sociology go on into a wide variety of jobs including social work, probation, or other public sector work. You will learn how to find information, extract what is important from it and turn it into an argument – this is a highly-valued skill.
“I love finding out about things like crime – you get a genuine insight into how society works.”
