At KS3 we use a mixture of formative (low stakes, informal) and summative (more high stakes, formal e.g. tests) assessment to gauge student performance. We do this to give students the best opportunity to show off their knowledge and skills as well as to understand what students know and what they don’t. In every lesson staff will engage students in formative assessment to check for understanding and adapt lessons accordingly. At frequent intervals students may engage in end of topic tests and assessments. Twice a year in all subjects, students will sit formal, spotlight assessments.
The combination of formative and summative assessment is reported to parents and families as a DOOYA grade.
Twice a year in KS3 you will receive reports which outline a DOOYA grade. The grade that each child receives for each subject is based around the level that we would expect a child to be working at in that subject, at that stage of school. This is known as age-related expectations.
