Students gain insight into technology careers

A group of Year 8 students from Tewkesbury Academy recently attended the BT Work Ready at BT’s headquarters in Birmingham, where they gained valuable insight into the world of work and the exciting opportunities available within the technology and telecommunications industry.

The visit focused on the importance of digital skills in the modern workplace, highlighting how technology is transforming the way people communicate, collaborate and solve problems. Students learned that digital skills are now essential in almost every career sector, from business and healthcare to engineering, education and the creative industries.

During the event, BT colleagues introduced students to the wide range of careers available within BT Group, including roles in cyber security, software engineering, data analysis, project management, customer service, marketing, network engineering and business operations. Students discovered that there are many pathways into these careers, including apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships, college courses and university study.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to work and learn on the 17th floor of BT’s impressive Birmingham office. From this vantage point, students enjoyed spectacular views across the city, as well as the opportunity to tour the building and experience a modern working environment. Three Snowhill provides workspace for up to 3,500 BT employees, making it BT’s largest hub outside London.

Students also took part in interactive activities designed to develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving and employability skills. The visit provided an inspiring glimpse into a professional working environment and helped students begin to understand how the subjects they study at school can connect to future careers in technology and digital industries.

Students left feeling motivated by the variety of opportunities available and with a greater understanding of the growing importance of digital skills in an increasingly connected world.

A spokesperson for the academy said: “The visit to BT gave our students a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand how the skills they are developing in school can connect to exciting careers in the real world.

“It was particularly valuable for students to meet professionals working across such a wide range of roles and to discover the many different routes into the technology industry.

“We hope the experience has inspired our students to think ambitiously about their futures and recognise the opportunities that are available to them.”
