A-level English Literature

Prof. Maureen Moran, of Brunel University, says that by studying English literature 'you develop the insight of an artist, the analytical precision of a scientist, and the persuasiveness of a lawyer'. Literature asks, and sometimes answers, the questions of who we are and how we shall live.

This is an interesting and challenging course, where you study a range of drama, prose and poetry texts. You'll be asked to consider contextual factors, such as the opinions of readers when texts were written, and to consider alternative readings and critical viewpoints. There will be theatre trips and study days to encourage you to go beyond the classroom. It will stretch you both critically and creatively, and at the same time you'll develop valuable skills for any number of career choices.

This is a highly respected course by universities as it leaves a wide range of options open for your future.

“English lit isn’t just about reading, it’s about understanding the life behind the book and how that has shaped the words. It’s not about being right, it’s about having an opinion and finding evidence to support it, even if it’s a completely different answer to the person next to you. It’s about analysis, inference and discussion. The books are great: the skills are better.”
